How We Got Started
Believe it or not, it all started in the produce industry.
The founder of the South Norfolk Business Directory, Suzy Loonam, is a self-employed 15-year resident of South Norfolk, a transplant from Florida.
After years in newspaper and magazine publishing, Suzy began producing websites in 1994 while working as a marketing specialist in the produce industy — citrus mostly.
She spent another 11 years marketing sweet onions while side-hustling in freelance writing, graphics, computer repair and instruction, and website development.
Suzy and her husband, Dan, moved to Historic South Norfolk in 2004 shortly after they were married. Since she was new to the area, Dan chose South Norfolk, really, and the restored 1900 “stick house” on Seaboard Avenue for his bride — partly for the charm and partly for the easy access to anywhere in the Coastal Virginal (Hampton Roads) area.
On July 4, 2006, the Loonams founded HistoricSouthNorfolk.com after their first Independence Day at Lakeside Park. Since then, they have maintained that page and many others belonging to businesses, charities, churches and civic groups in the community.
Our mission is to promote commerce in South Norfolk. We always wanted to put businesses on that empty blue sign at the freeway exit to Poidexter Street. We made phone calls, presented reports, and tried to generate the revenue needed to put something on that sign, but interest was lacking.
We never did get any ads on that sign, but maybe this directory is better!
- This directory holds more data than a sign.
- This directory is designed to be used on phones.
- This directory can lead buyers to sellers using interactive maps.
- This directory can grow with the needs of South Norfolk!
- THIS DIRECTORY IS FREE!
